Three-month closure for Blaby shops

A court has ordered that two shops in Blaby village must remain closed for three months under a closure notice served by Blaby District Council.

Leicester Magistrates’ Court extended the closure of the two premises, Candy Corner and Candy Corner 1 – now M&M Express - on Monday 20 July.

An initial closure notice was served on the businesses by Blaby District Council and partner agencies on 3 July, following concerns about potential disruption in the area. The action was intended to protect local communities.

The order was extended for two weeks by magistrates on Monday 6 July until a new hearing date of 20 July.

The Council, with the support of Leicestershire Police and Trading Standards applied to the court for the businesses to remain closed for three months, under Part 4, Chapter 3 of the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014

Considering the evidence, magistrates agreed with the Council that they should remain closed until midnight on 19 October 2026.

Both businesses must remain closed to staff and the public. A breach of the order could result in a fine or prison.

Councillor Ben Taylor, Leader of Blaby District Council, said: “Our priority has been to protect residents and maintain community confidence, and so I am pleased that magistrates agreed that the premises should remain closed.

“As a District Council we acted quickly using the powers available to us. We are reviewing the situation with partners, and I am urging other organisations who are responsible for immigration or employment checks to do all they can to prevent this situation from happening again.

“I understand people may be concerned, but we will continue to do all we can within our powers to monitor the situation.”
