EV charging comes to Enderby Leisure Centre
An exciting project to bring electric vehicle (EV) charging to Enderby Leisure Centre starts next week, thanks to Blaby District Council gaining a share of more than £1milion in government funding.
Four 11kWh chargers powered by a solar panel canopy are being installed on the car park to the side of the building.
The initiative will allow local residents as well as centre users to charge their vehicles as part of wider ambitions to increase access to EV stations across the District.
Blaby District Council, along with the other six district and borough councils in the county, have worked together to deliver the project as part of the Green Living Leicestershire Partnership.
The partnership successfully bid for funding from the government’s LEVI programme aimed at increasing local EV charging infrastructure. Support for the bid came from the Midlands Net Zero Hub (MNZH).
Funding also came from the Pooled Business Rates Fund which is managed by the Leicestershire Business and Skills Partnership.
The installation is expected to take around five weeks to complete. Any disruption to road access and car parking will be kept to a minimum.
Councillor Nigel Grundy, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood Services and Assets, said: "This is long-awaited scheme which we are delighted to see come to fruition. The installation of EV chargers, using solar energy as a key power source, will bring benefits for both centre users and the local community who may struggle to access charging points.
"We know there is a need to deliver more EV stations as figures show as of April 2025 there were 95 EV charge points in the District as opposed to around 1,938 electric cars registered. Making it easier for people to use electric vehicles with better access to chargers is one way we are fulfilling our ambitions and playing our part in reducing carbon emissions and combating climate change."
James Naylor, area contract manager for Everyone Active, who manage the centre in partnership with Blaby District Council, said: "We're committed to reducing the environmental impact of our centres while continuing to provide outstanding facilities, so it’s great news that EV charging is coming to our Enderby site. We’re proud to work alongside Blaby District Council to support them in achieving their net zero ambitions, which is the most important part of our own net zero strategy."
The cost of charging is yet to be decided but will be competitive.
Charging hubs are also being located at sites in the other six district and borough council areas.
