Get on your bike to see the District
A series of scenic new cycle routes are launching to encourage residents and visitors to explore the best of the District by bike.
The first two routes, starting from Everards Meadows, were unveiled at a special event to coincide with English Tourism Week, which this year boasts the theme Local Stories, National Growth.
Others, taking in landmarks, natural views and retail centres, will follow as Blaby District Council acts on one of the key priorities in its Tourism Growth Plan – promoting sustainable travel as a way to enjoy in the area’s attractions.
All routes are aimed to suit different abilities and confidence levels, giving residents, families and visitors more accessible options for exploring the District by bike.
Everards Meadows was chosen as the start point for the inaugural routes as it links up to Route 6 of the National Cycle Network, provides waymarked trails and offers easy access to the wider district.
It also features easy bike hire from Specialized Leicester as well as food, drink and nearby shopping options.
One route loops into Blaby village, including Bouskell Park and the historic Ice House, while the other heads into Leicester city centre.
Marc Greenwood, Blaby District Council Director for Place, said: "We are proud of the many varied attractions we have in the District and are always keen to shout about them and encourage visitors, whether that’s from near or far. However, given the challenges of climate change and wanting to improve the health and wellbeing of our residents we are also keen to promote sustainable and active forms of travel.
“These two cycle routes, and our plans for more, are a prime example of marrying these aims and fulfilling the ambitions in our Tourism Growth Plan. Come and experience what we have to offer but why not do it by bike. It’s a different, fun and leisurely way to take in and experience Blaby District."
The project was made possible through a Legacy Grant from Leicestershire County Council. The Legacy Grant scheme, which is funded by Active Travel England and managed by the county council’s Sustainable Travel Team, allows local organisations and community groups to launch travel and transport initiatives that will have a long lasting and positive impact for local residents.
